E-commerce category page SEO: turning listings into rankings

How to optimise category and collection pages to rank and convert, not just product pages.

Product pages often get the attention, but category pages capture the high-intent, high-volume searches. They deserve their own strategy.

Category pages target head terms

Searches like "running shoes" or "coffee grinders" are broader than any single product. A well-built category page can rank for them.

Add unique copy

A grid of products is thin. Add a short, genuinely useful intro and supporting sections below the grid: what to look for, comparisons, FAQs. Avoid boilerplate repeated across every category.

Handle pagination and filters

  • Use self-referencing canonicals on paginated pages
  • Canonical or noindex filtered/sorted URLs to avoid duplicates
  • Keep a crawlable path to deeper pages

Titles and meta

Use the SEO title generator for descriptive, clickable titles and the meta description generator for snippets. Include the category and a benefit.

Structured data

Use BreadcrumbList for the category path, and Product markup on the items. A clean breadcrumb trail helps users and search engines.

Internal linking

Link related categories and top products to spread authority. Keep the most valuable categories linked from the main navigation.
