Heading structure: write headings users and search engines both love

How to build a clear H1–H6 hierarchy, where keywords belong, and the mistakes to avoid.

Headings are the outline of your page. Good structure helps readers skim, helps search engines understand the topic, and wins featured snippets.

The rules

  • One H1 per page that states the topic
  • H2s for main sections, H3s for sub-points
  • Keep the hierarchy logical — do not jump from H1 to H4
  • Include the primary keyword in the H1 and related terms in H2/H3s naturally

Write them as questions where useful

Question-shaped H2s match how people search and pair well with FAQ schema. For example, an H2 of "How do I write a meta description?" answers the query directly.

Mistakes

  • Multiple H1s
  • Headings used purely for styling
  • Walls of text with no sub-headings
  • Keyword-stuffed headings
