How to rank in Google Maps (the local pack)

The factors behind local pack rankings and the practical steps to improve your Google Maps visibility.

The local pack — the map results with three businesses — is where most local clicks happen. Ranking there comes down to relevance, distance and prominence.

You cannot change distance, so win on the other two

Relevance

  • Pick the most accurate primary category in your Google Business Profile
  • Add all relevant secondary categories
  • Put your main services in the profile and on your site
  • Add LocalBusiness structured data (see below)

Prominence

  • Reviews: volume, recency and rating all matter — ask every happy customer
  • Citations: consistent NAP across reputable directories
  • Website authority and local content
  • Photos and regular Google Posts

On-site signals

Build a unique page per service and location, with local proof and directions. Add LocalBusiness structured data including openingHoursSpecification, geo and areaServed.

Tune your profile

Keep hours accurate, respond to reviews, and use messaging. A complete, active profile outranks a stale one for equally relevant businesses.

Track it

Use the Insights in your Google Business Profile and rank tracking for "service + city" queries to see movement.
