Serving multiple languages or regions is powerful but error-prone. The goal: show each user the right version and let search engines understand the relationships.
Choose a URL structure
- ccTLD — example.de (strong geo signal, more expensive)
- Subdomain — de.example.com
- Subfolder — example.com/de/ (often easiest)
Pick one and stay consistent.
Use hreflang correctly
Every version links to every other version, including itself, plus x-default. Tags must be reciprocal and use absolute URLs. See hreflang tags for international SEO and generate them with the hreflang generator.
Do not machine-translate and forget
Thin, unreviewed translations rank poorly and can look spammy. Localise content, currency, dates and examples, and get a native review for key pages.
Technical care
- Do not auto-redirect based on IP alone; offer a language switcher
- Keep one language per URL — never mix languages on one page
- Use a self-referencing canonical on each language version
- Add
langattributes in the HTML
