The 6 SEO metrics that actually matter (and how to read them)

Cut through the vanity numbers: the metrics that predict growth and how to monitor them.

Dashboards love vanity metrics, but only a few numbers tell you whether SEO is working.

The six that matter

1. Indexed pages — how many of your pages Google has in the index. Growth starts here.

2. Impressions — how often you appear. Rising impressions mean more coverage.

3. Clicks — the traffic you actually get. Falling CTR with rising impressions points to title/meta problems.

4. Average position — where you sit. Watch direction, not the absolute number.

5. Conversions from organic — the business outcome. Link Search Console to GA4.

6. Crawl errors / exclusions — technical drag that caps everything else.

Read them together

Impressions up, clicks flat → improve titles and descriptions with the SEO title generator. Clicks up, conversions flat → fix the page or the offer. Exclusions growing → check robots.txt and canonicals.

A weekly routine

  • Check Indexing for new exclusions
  • Compare impressions vs clicks by page
  • Note position movers (#4–#10 are your quick wins)
  • Fix one technical issue
